Veteran Actress Kate Henshaw Calls for Abolishment of NYSC, Citing Safety Concerns

Kate Henshaw, a well-respected figure in Nigeria’s Nollywood industry, has added her voice to the growing chorus calling for the discontinuation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. Henshaw’s call comes in the wake of recent security concerns that have put the safety of corps members at risk, particularly in regions where their well-being cannot be assured.

Highlighting the troubling incidents of insecurity that have impacted NYSC members, Henshaw took to Twitter on Wednesday to express her stance on the matter. In her tweet, she emphasized that given the current state of security, the government should consider abolishing the scheme altogether.

The actress referenced a recent case where eight NYSC members were kidnapped along a highway in Zamfara State, shedding light on the growing dangers faced by young people who are serving the nation under the NYSC banner.

Reflecting on her own experience as a corps member, Henshaw recalled the positive memories she gathered while serving in the North. She reminisced about a time when she could safely travel from Bauchi to the airport and then fly to Lagos with only her NYSC ID card, which also earned her a ticket rebate.

However, Henshaw argued that the present reality is far different. She lamented that the current circumstances have rendered it nearly impossible for corps members to travel within the country without encountering hurdles, restrictions, or worse.

Henshaw’s tweet underscored her deep concern for the welfare of young people who dedicate themselves to national service, only to find themselves vulnerable to security risks. The actress called for an end to the NYSC program, asserting that it is no longer justifiable to continue a scheme that places the lives of young people at risk due to the prevailing security challenges.

Concluding her tweet, Henshaw emphasized that security should be an absolute priority, requiring comprehensive solutions rather than half-measures. Her call for the abolishment of the NYSC scheme is a reminder of the broader debate surrounding the program’s relevance and the safety of its participants.
