Unknown gunmen, have reportedly opened fire at a burial ceremony in Ndingbu village, in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Daily Vendor Newspaper learnt that the incident took place on Friday when the gunmen stormed the funeral venue and started shooting sporadically in attempt to disarm the vigilante operatives who were at the burial ground to provide security.
In another development, the gunmen were said to have also attacked a vigilante office at Utuh community in the same Local Government Area, where they set the building ablaze and also abducted a staff.
The State Police Command’s Spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga who confirmed the incident in a statement made available to The Daily Vendor Newspaper, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng has however ordered manhunt on the armed men.
According to Ikenga, the Operatives comprising of Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorist unit, Special forces and others are already in the area and normalcy has been restored while operation are still ongoing.
“The Commissioner of Police CP Echeng Echeng has ordered manhunt on armed men who allegedly attacked vigilante operatives in a burial at Ndingbu village, Nnewi. The Operatives comprising of Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorist unit, Special forces and others are already in the area and normalcy has been restored while operation are still going on
“Although no notification was given to the Police about the planned burial but information reveals that the Vigilante groups where invited. Further details received that the miscreants started shooting sporadically in attempt to disarm the vigilante operatives.
“The Command while assuring that the police and other security agents are firm in providing security services in the state also urge residents of the area to help Police with information that will aid the ongoing operation,” he said.
