The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife has described women as untapped reservoirs. She said that empowerment of women is empowerment of the society.
Ekwunife said this on Saturday, February 27, 2021 during her 10th empowerment programme held at Senator Uche Ekwunife Centre Awka. The programme was in line with her drive to improve the living standard of Ndi Anambra as well as ensure that women are empowered to be self-reliant.
The programme which was attended by women across the 326 wards in the state, had the beneficiaries overwhelmed with joy as the widely celebrated federal lawmaker gave out gas cookers, gas cylinders and cash grants to them.
Speaking during the event, Ekwunife who is a leading aspirant for the november 6 governorship election noted that women empowerment is the most critical form of empowerment. She stated that when a woman is empowered, a family and by extension the society is empowered.
“I am committed to using my position to enhance the place of women in our society. We need to empower our women to become working housewives, and make not just domestic, but financial contributions to their homes”.
Senator Ekwunife stated that she is running for governor because her experience, knowledge and understanding of the state’s political and economic system place her ahead of other contenders in the race. “I have the perfect combination to drive the developmental vision of Anambra state”, she said.
Reacting on behalf of the women, the PDP state woman leader, Lady Justina Nwafor lauded the super-performing Senator for raising the bar of good governance, and inspiring greater women participation in politics. She stated that women are priceless to the society, and urged the women to mobilize other women in their localities to support the party in the state.
The programme had remarks from some members of Senator Ekwunife campaign organization. The former Chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr Rose Nwankwo, in her remarks urged the women to embrace the opportunity to improve their visibility in government by throwing their weight behind Senator Ekwunife. She said that Ekwunife has shown that she has the capacity and capability to win the upcoming election.
Former commissioner for women affairs Anambra State, Lady Henrietta Agbata and other members of the campaign organization were present to address the women who expressed their excitements with chants and shouts of “Uche Ekwunife Ga Achi Anambra”, affirming their total support for Senator Ekwunife’s governorship ambition.
