Zion Ministry Was Founded on Deception

By Fr. Kelvin Ugwu

The Zion Ministry has come under scrutiny for allegedly starting under the false pretense of being a Catholic ministry. According to Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, the ministry’s foundation was built on a deceptive claim, convincing many that it was an authentic extension of the Catholic Church.

To sustain this illusion, the ministry incorporated several Catholic practices, including the recitation of the Rosary, Stations of the Cross, Catholic hymns, and the use of religious images. These practices were strategically employed to reinforce the ministry’s purported Catholic identity, despite lacking official recognition.

Initially, the ministry conducted Masses and invited priests, even though the Archbishop of Lagos did not grant approval. The ministry reportedly resorted to inviting priests through unofficial channels to conduct Mass. Additionally, they invited priests from abroad to provide testimonies, further validating their supposed Catholic affiliation.

Fr. Ugwu argues that the ministry’s core issue stems from its deceptive origins. Had the founder genuinely intended for it to be a Catholic ministry, he would have followed the appropriate procedures and adhered to the Church’s guidelines. Instead, the ministry’s founder chose to maintain a Catholic appearance, thereby misleading unsuspecting Catholics.

Currently, the Zion Ministry holds Sunday services that conflict with traditional Catholic Mass times. During Lent, they organize Stations of the Cross at times that coincide with parish activities. The ministry has also expanded its facilities, functioning as a full-fledged church. Fr. Ugwu questions why the founder did not disclose these intentions from the beginning, thereby avoiding confusion and conflict.

Fr. Ugwu also expressed concern over the behavior of some Zion Ministry followers, who he claims insult Catholic priests attempting to reveal the truth about the ministry and its leader. He urges these followers to reconsider their stance and to respect differing viewpoints.

This critique of the Zion Ministry has sparked debate among the faithful, raising important questions about transparency, authenticity, and adherence to religious guidelines.
