As preparations for the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly intensify, lawmakers-elect have started vying for the Senate presidency. The Senate presidency is one of the key positions that will be contested in the red Chamber. In addition to the Senate presidency, other positions that are up for grabs include the deputy Senate president and Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as the majority and minority caucuses.
The 10th National Assembly, which will be inaugurated in June 2023 after the swearing-in of President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on May 29, will be composed of lawmakers from various political parties, including the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party. Others are the Social Democratic Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, and Young Peoples Progressive Party.
The race for the Senate presidency has already begun, with several lawmakers indicating their interest in the position. The choice of the next Senate president is expected to depend largely on the zoning of the office by the ruling APC.
The ruling party is expected to release the zoning formula for the 10th Assembly leadership after the Ramadan fast, according to the Senate spokesperson, Senator Ajibola Basiru. Some lawmakers who have declared their ambitions to lead the 10th National Assembly include Senator Jibrin Barau, Sani Musa, Orji Kalu, GodsWill Akpabio, Senators Osita Izunaso, Peter Ndubueze, Abdul’Aziz Yari, Ahmad Lawan, and Ali Ndume.
