PRESS RELEASE
9th September, 2021
SOUTHERN PEOPLES CONGRESS SUPPORTS LAGOS STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY FOR PASSING VAT AND ANTI-OPEN GRAZING BILLS TODAY!
The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday passed the Value Added Tax Bill, as Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed the acting clerk of the house, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, to transmit a clean copy to Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu for assent.
The House also passed the bill that prohibits open cattle grazing in the state.
The two bills were passed after unanimous votes by the lawmakers at the sitting where the bills was read the third time.
Earlier this week the Rivers State Government had won its case in court, which gives the State Government the powers to collect Value Added Tax in the State.
The SOUTHERN PEOPLES CONGRESS (SPC) sees this development as a remarkable step in the right directions, and yet another victory for democracy.
We urge all other States in the Southern Region to follow suit, and as a matter of urgency take advantage of this moves in their various State Houses of Assembly to pass into law the Value Added Tax and Anti-Open Grazing Bills.
However, we wish to advice the State Governments to channel the revenue generated into meaningful usage and development of the states, they should use the monies judiciously by creating jobs, provisions of basic amenities and if possible make education free for all primary and post primary levels.
The State Governments should not see it as another window to enriched themselves.
Ones again we salute the Rivers State Government for taking that bold step.
Signed:
Hon. George Wilson.
President
SOUTHERN PEOPLES CONGRESS (SPC)
