Kafilat Ogbara, the winner of the February 25, 2023 House of Representatives election in Kosofe Federal Constituency of Lagos State, has called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to be more gender-friendly in the decision-making process for the election of principal officers in the upcoming 10th National Assembly. Ogbara, who is also the National Coordinator of Women in Nigeria for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (WIN4ABAT), made the call in Lagos on Saturday.
As the ruling party prepares for the inauguration of the National Assembly and the election of principal officers, Ogbara urged the APC and other political parties to be mindful of the National gender policy and to ensure more gender inclusivity in the zoning of principal offices in the two chambers.
Ogbara emphasized that women have the necessary skills to provide effective leadership and urged political parties to intentionally cede other leadership positions to women to ensure that female legislators have representation in the leaderships of the two chambers. She also suggested that the Speaker and Senate President should be individuals who are gender-sensitive and prepared to change the status quo of failed gender-related bills in the 9th Assembly.
Ogbara expressed confidence that the incoming National Assembly would work in synergy with the executive arm of government to ensure smooth administration of the country and the renewal of the hopes of Nigerians for a greater Nigeria.
