CIIPAD, in collaboration with other Nigeria Civil Society groups, sets to organise a National Summit to reestablish Nigeria’s unity, peace, security

The Society for National Unity, Peace, and Security Summit (SNUPSS) 2023, organized by the Centre for International Integrity, Peace, and Development in Nigeria (CIIPAD), is set to address the pressing need for unity, peace, and security in Nigeria. CIIPAD, in collaboration with the National Anti-Corruption Coalition and the Independent Corrupt Practises and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has been actively involved in numerous projects aimed at fostering a harmonious and secure environment for our nation.

The upcoming summit seeks to shed light on the importance of peace and security among Nigeria’s youth as the country continues to face a critical period. Recognising that the security forces alone cannot restore normalcy to the nation, CIIPAD emphasises the responsibility of society to address the escalating crimes that threaten the well-being of our fellow citizens. Incidents of kidnapping, farmer-herder clashes, rape, murder, and armed robbery have surged and spread like wildfire across various states, necessitating immediate action.

It is crucial to dispel the misguided notion among some youth that engaging in criminal activities, particularly kidnapping, leads to quick riches. CIIPAD aims to enlighten them about the severe consequences and implications of their actions. The sacrifices made by countless innocent individuals within the security forces who have lost their lives while striving to maintain peace should not be in vain. It is imperative to differentiate between the few bad actors tarnishing the reputation of the security forces and the majority of dedicated personnel who work tirelessly to safeguard our nation. This summit aims to address this issue and rectify any misperceptions.

To ensure a comprehensive approach, all agitators from diverse perspectives will be invited to engage in a roundtable dialogue. CIIPAD believes that this inclusive discussion will foster the long-awaited peace our country desperately needs. The collective contributions and involvement of citizens, through their voices and actions, are vital in the fight against crimes. National success in combating insecurity hinges on the unwavering dedication and commitment of all Nigerians to safeguarding their nation.

The key objectives of the summit are as follows:

1. Promote national unity, peace, and security across all regions in Nigeria.
2. Educate young people about the dangers of insecurity and provide them with firsthand experiences on how to address issues such as kidnapping, farmer-herder clashes, rape, murder, and armed robbery.
3. Foster collaboration among the government, youth, and well-meaning individuals to effectively combat insecurity and ensure the sustainability of unity, peace, and security in our nation.
4. Encourage the active participation of the youth as key stakeholders in the fight against crimes.
5. Establish a consensus that promotes collaborative solutions and actions to enhance security in Nigeria.
