The Federal Government, through the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), has given relief materials to over 1000 people who were displaced by flood disaster in Awba-Ofemili, Awka North Local Government Area. The relief materials, which include 122 bags of 25kg bags of rice, 122 cartons of instant noodles, 122 bags of semo, 21 cartons of 4.5 litres of canned groundnut oil, seven bags of sachet salt, and 20 cartons of maggi, were presented to the community leaders by the Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI, Hajia Imaam Sulaiman-Ibrahim, who was represented by the Principal Administration Officer in the agency, Mrs Gloria Ene.
The Federal Commissioner explained that the relief materials were meant to cushion the effects of last year’s flood disaster on the people and warned against the sale of the items. She also assured that the Buhari-led administration would continue to make efforts towards alleviating the sufferings of Nigerians.
Reacting to the gesture, a Special Assistant to the Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Security Matters, Chief Ignatius Okafor, expressed gratitude to the federal government for remembering Awba-Ofemili people. He said that the flood disaster caused a lot of damages, and the people still need help from the government and good-spirited individuals, as the effects of the disaster are still much on them.
Some of the beneficiaries of the relief materials also appreciated the federal government for the kind gesture, narrating their ugly experiences during the flood outbreak last year. They expressed their gratitude for the assistance, saying that the relief materials would go a long way in helping them to cope with the aftermath of the disaster.
The Parish Priest of St. Paul’s Catholic Church Awba-Ofemili, Reverend Father Joseph Nwilo, who also commended the administration of Professor Chukwuma Soludo for remembering the area in road infrastructure, said that the people in the area really need help in the areas of agriculture, healthcare, and access to portable water. He added that the completion of the road will reduce the sufferings of the people.
