HISTORY: The biggest Ship to ever berth in Nigeria arrived Onne Port

History was made on Saturday as the largest container vessel ever to berth in any Nigerian port was successfully received at Onne Port in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The vessel, Maerskline Stardelhorn, is 10,000 container vessel; it arrived the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT), Onne, at 4:20 local time on Saturday.

It had earlier entered the state through Bonny, at about 2:26, and got to Onne 1:46mins later at 4:20 pm.

Maerskline Stardelhorn, at 300mt long and 48mt wide, is over half a football field in size and has capacity for nearly 10,000 Twenty-foot equivalent unit containers.

The Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) ecstatically announced the feat via a tweet from its verified Twitter handle @nigerianports.

It stated, “The Nigerian Ports Authority is pleased to announce the successful berthing of the biggest Container vessel to ever call at any Nigerian port.

“The Maerskline Stardelhorn vessel with Length overall of 300 metres, width of 48 metres was received at the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT), Onne in Rivers State at 1620 hours on Saturday, August 15, 2020.

“The vessel, which has a capacity of 9,971 (TEUs) is a flagship from Singapore,” the online statement added.

Information reaching to Daily News Reporters shows that the vessel departed South Africa en route to Onne about a month ago.

Vesselfinder described the vessel as “a Container Ship built in 2015 (5 years old) is owner by Constant Marine LLC and operated by Maersk AS, and currently sails under the flag of Singapore.”
