The Nigeria Pillar of Sports, Chief Donatus Agu-Ejidike JP has congratulated the 2023 champions of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL), Enyimba International Football Club of Aba.
This was contained in a Press Release signed by the Pillar of Sports himself and made available to newsmen in Ilorin on Monday.
The Aba Elephants, as Enyimba is fondly called by its teeming fans emerged champions of the league, after coming top of the table in the Super-Six tournament, held recently in Lagos.
The tournament followed the completion of an abridged version of the league which saw the 20 teams grouped into two, with the top three teams in each of the groups selected for the Super-Six, from which Enyimba emerged with 9 points, same as Remo Star FC of Ikenne, and the defending champions of the league, Rivers United football club of Portharcourt.
The two-time CAF Champions league winners topped the table with a superior goal difference, Remo Stars and Rivers United came second and third respectively.
The triumph made it a record 9th time the Finidi George-tutored lads had won the league title.
In the same vein, Chief Ejidike also commended the organisers of the league, the Interim Management Committee (IMC), for doing a marvelous job, after the league started later than expected. Ejidike posits that IMC had proved wrong, those who doubted its ability to deliver a successful league in the 2022/2023 season.
He described the timely completion of the league as an achievement that would enable the NPFL season to be streamlined with those of most of the countries in Europe and the rest of the continent.
He equally commended the Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye-led IMC for being able to bring the Super league to the television screens of many football-loving Nigerians, something he said has been lacking for years.
He therefore charged the organisers not to rest on their oars, by doing even better in the coming season.
The Nnewi-born Sports philanthropist also acknowledged the quality of football artistry on display by the rest of the participating teams, while charging those who will fly the flags of the country at the Continental level to go on, and do Nigerians proud, come next season.
