Supplementary Elections in Nigeria Marred by Violence and Vote-Buying

The recently held supplementary elections in Nigeria were marred by violence, vote-buying, and other glitches, leading to the deaths of at least four people in Kano and Kebbi states.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested 12 individuals in Kano and Katsina states over alleged vote-buying.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) won several seats in the state assembly and senate, respectively.

However, voting in many polling units and constituencies was seamless with an impressive turnout of voters in many polling units in Ogbia Constituency II, Bayelsa State.

In addition to the deaths, three houses were set ablaze in Kano LGA, while a man was shot dead for snatching a ballot box from officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the election in Kebbi State. The incidents have caused public outcry and criticism of Nigeria’s electoral process.
