The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit (MSSN Lagos), has called on President Bola Tinubu to allocate the funds saved from the removal of fuel subsidy towards implementing urgent reforms in the education sector. The student body emphasized the importance of safeguarding the future of education in Nigeria amid the country’s current economic challenges.
In a statement signed by Mr. Kamoldeen Abiona, the Amir (President) of MSSN Lagos, the organization commended President Tinubu’s commitment to tackling pressing issues and removing fuel subsidy to redirect funds to crucial sectors like public transportation, healthcare, schools, housing, and national security.
However, the students’ body stressed the need for swift and focused implementation of educational reforms to ensure that the education sector benefits effectively from these policy changes. They emphasized that education plays a vital role in Nigeria’s development, and investing in it is essential for the nation’s progress and prosperity.
The statement outlined several recommendations for the government to prioritize, including making education more affordable, demonstrating transparency in the allocation of funds, collaborating with educational institutions and civil society organizations to address challenges, and providing timely support to educational institutions facing financial difficulties.
MSSN Lagos also expressed concern over the proposal of providing interest-based loans as part of the government’s palliative measures for those affected by the fuel subsidy removal. They highlighted that many Muslims, who do not engage in usury, may be excluded from benefiting from such loans. The student body urged President Tinubu to explore alternative methods of support that consider the religious sensitivities of all citizens, promoting fairness and equal access to resources.
In conclusion, MSSN Lagos expressed its commitment to work with the government and stakeholders to achieve a more robust and inclusive education system. They remain hopeful that strategic and timely implementation of educational reforms will strengthen Nigeria and prepare the country to embrace future opportunities.
